Knowing Your Role

The sports world has some great play by play guys, but it also has some no so great ones.

I count myself somewhere in the middle.

As a personal rule, I avoid editorializing. A play by play host sitting in their box high above the playing surface giving a sermon about things they are so far removed from is seldom fair to the players and coaches. The athletes playing, officials officiating and coaches give their all. Colour analysts are there for opinions. People who have played the game, people who have coached it and been in the trenches know what's what on the playing surface and have the wisdom to editorialize.

I have not been in the trenches. My job is to tell the story of what is happening, not to decide who is a hero or villain. I leave that up to the audience.

With that in mind, I apologize for my choice of words in the above clip. I was not fair to the coach. I only heard his half of the conversation, and it was wrong of me to brand anyone as 'classless'.

No one put me up to this, no one complained. I live my life be a strict set of principles and I broke one.

Even though you weren't wrong in what you said I can appreciate your ideals. Would be nice if more play by play people would stop trying to sound smart and just tell us the score and what's happening in the game.

Switzer, nice work in owning up to what you feel is a mistake. I also don't think you were out of line, and it's pretty easy to get caught up in the Heat of the Moment (one of my favourite Asia songs. I also enjoy Platinum Blonde, for related reasons).

I live on Moose Jaw and apparently need to go to more Millers games. This guy is a beauty.
